Pictou County Go Clean, Get Green

Urban Roots once again participated in Go Clean, Get Green in collaboration with DivertNS and PC Solid Waste! We have made this an annual team building tradition - this year we divided our groups, with one group cleaning up at Northumberland Regional High School in Alma and another group cleaning along Pictou Landing Road near our office.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake

Each year we take part in Bowl for Kids Sake, organized and hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou County! This year's theme was "Plaid Up to Ignite Potential". We were able to donate $1,000 in raffle ticket sales and pledges from our amazing clients!

Thank you to all who supported our 2025 team!

Virtual Forest Initiative

Urban Roots virtual forest is a visual representation of the growing forest of trees we plant in the course of our work! In 2024, we planted 470 seedlings and 260 full-sized trees. This also tied in with our Urban Roots Free Seedling campaign - we acquired 750 tree seedlings in Spruce and Pine. We offered a seedling to each of our tree care clients as a replacement to any we unfortunately had to remove, and also handed out FREE seedlings with purchase at the NG Farmer's Market!

2024 Environmental Impact Award

Urban Roots had the absolute pleasure of attending the Chamber of Commerce Awards Ceremony in November 2024. We were the recipients of an Environmental Impact Award, nominated by Wes Surrett of Ignite Atlantic! This award was granted to us as a reflection of our environmental efforts through tree planting initiatives, our annual Go Clean, Get Green initiatives and our work to continually improve and beautify the community. Thank you!

Pictou County Home Show

Urban Roots attended the 2025 Pictou County Home Show at the PC Wellness Centre. Our focus this year was featuring all things Arboriculture and Tree Care. Our Arborist & Marketing Manager enjoyed discussing all things trees with attendees!

Annual Flower Donation

Urban Roots completed our first and second Annual Flower Donation. We searched for a local organization that could enjoy our flowers, and chose Ivey's Terrace Nursing Home in Trenton. Flowers were planted in August, 2023 and 2024, and sourced from our greenhouse. We hope to make this an annual campaign and brighten up local organizations in our area!

Tree for Boston

Urban Roots had the honor of wrapping the Tree for Boston for several years running. Every year, Nova Scotia sends the city of Boston a Christmas tree to thank them for the assistance they gave us after the Halifax Explosion on December 6, 1917.

Tree Planting Initiatives

Urban Roots participated in several tree plantings with the Town of New Glasgow in 2023. Our most recent was on Earth Day 2024, assisting with a red Oak planting on Park Street. Taking part in tree planting initiatives aligns with our values of plant health care and permaculture!

Litter Intervention Study

In Fall of 2023, Urban Roots collaborated with Pictou County Solid Waste, DivertNS, and Tim Hortons to conduct a Litter Intervention Study. We were chosen based on our participation every year as a business in Go Clean, Get Green! This study determined that over 2 weeks, litter was decreased by placing signage and extra garbage bins in local drive-thrus.

NS Works Pictou County Job Fair

Our HR Manager and Marketing Coordinator attended the 2023 and 2024 Nova Scotia Works Job Fair, located at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. We loved meeting all the friendly faces at our booth, as well as the other local businesses in our area who participated!
